July 5, 2025 — Lagos, Nigeria
The Lagos State Government has restated its commitment to promoting tourism by harnessing the potential of agricultural experiences across the state.
Speaking during a strategic meeting with stakeholders in the tourism and agricultural sectors, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, highlighted that the initiative is in line with the T.H.E.M.E.S+ development agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
She noted that agri-tourism offers a unique opportunity to blend rural development with cultural promotion, thereby creating new streams of revenue, jobs, and learning experiences for both residents and visitors. According to her, Lagos is strategically positioned to become a major destination for eco-friendly and experience-based tourism, with agricultural hubs across the state offering a variety of attractions.
“From rice farms in the Epe axis to fish villages and organic gardens, Lagos has the raw potential to become a premier agri-tourism hub in West Africa. We’re working to turn that vision into reality,” the Commissioner said.
The Lagos State Government plans to integrate farm visits, rural homestays, food tours, and agricultural festivals into its broader tourism development plan. The Ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of Agriculture to create structured packages that will appeal to local and international tourists while educating the public on sustainable farming and food systems.
Stakeholders at the meeting pledged support for the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that would not only deepen the tourism value chain but also stimulate agricultural innovation and rural revitalization.
