Lagos, July 2, 2025 — The Lagos State Government has called on residents to adopt environmentally responsible habits as part of a renewed effort to promote a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable city.
Speaking during a statewide environmental advocacy campaign, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the need for collective action in tackling issues such as indiscriminate waste disposal, plastic pollution, and flooding caused by blocked drainage systems.
Wahab noted that while the government continues to invest in environmental infrastructure and enforcement, lasting change would only be possible when citizens take ownership of their environment through daily actions.
“As a government, we are doing our part through regular desilting of drainages, waste evacuation, environmental enforcement, and policy reform. But for Lagos to become a truly sustainable and resilient megacity, we need all hands on deck. That means every resident must play their part—by disposing of waste properly, avoiding single-use plastics, supporting recycling, and desisting from acts that degrade the environment,” he said.
The Commissioner further revealed that the state has intensified its public sensitization efforts through community outreach, school programmes, and collaborations with environmental NGOs to ensure Lagosians are well-informed about eco-friendly practices.
He also called attention to the recent enforcement of the ban on certain categories of single-use plastics, urging residents and businesses to comply with the new regulations and embrace alternative packaging options.
In a related development, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) reiterated its readiness to support households and businesses with improved waste collection services and recycling initiatives. The agency also warned against illegal dumping, stating that defaulters would face strict penalties.
Environmental activists and community leaders have praised the government’s renewed push for behavioural change, stating that consistent public education, backed by enforcement and incentives, will be critical to achieving sustainable environmental outcomes in the state.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to creating a cleaner environment for present and future generations, noting that a culture of environmental responsibility is key to achieving the goals outlined in its climate action and urban development plans.
