Lagos residents, take note! Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is calling on businesses across the state to consider flexible work arrangements, including remote work, to ease the severe traffic congestion plaguing areas like Victoria Island and Ikoyi.
The gridlock was triggered by the closure of the Independence Bridge in Bonny Camp, due to ongoing repair work by the Federal Ministry of Works. Many commuters found themselves stranded on Wednesday, with some spending hours stuck in traffic.
One Island resident, Oluwatosin Akanni, a cake maker, shared her frustrating experience with the media, saying she left the office at 9 pm but didn’t get home until past 2 am the following day.
In response to the chaos, Governor Sanwo-Olu took to X.com on Wednesday, urging businesses to explore alternative work models.
He said a temporary shift in work culture can go a long way in reducing traffic pressure and supporting our collective well-being.
The Governor also emphasized the need for innovative solutions to keep the city moving while critical infrastructure repairs are carried out.
Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that repairing the Independence Bridge was long overdue and apologized to residents for the inconvenience.
He explained that the decision to fix the Independence Bridge was not made overnight and that the structural integrity of the bridge had deteriorated, and delaying this intervention any further would have put lives at risk.
