Lagos State Invests Over ₦8.4 Billion to Boost Creative Economy and Tourism in One Year

The Lagos State Government has revealed that it invested more than ₦8.4 billion within the last year to support the growth of the creative economy, tourism, and related sectors across the state. This substantial investment is part of efforts to position Lagos as Africa’s foremost hub for culture, arts, and tourism.

Speaking at the 2025 Annual Ministerial Press Briefing, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, disclosed that the Ministry sponsored 143 cultural events and festivals between May 2024 and May 2025 through its Creative Arts Department.

These events spanned music concerts, fashion shows, film festivals, art exhibitions, food and cultural festivals, and empowerment initiatives for creative industry players. Among the prominent events supported were Felabration, Lagos Fashion Week, World Tourism Day celebrations, Africa Fashion Week London, Queen Moremi the Musical, the Eyo Mini Parade, Naija Native Fest, Afrofood & Drinks Festival, and the World Travel Market.

In addition to financial support, the Ministry issued 124 endorsement letters to creatives, assisting them in securing external sponsorships and expanding their reach nationally and internationally.

A highlight of the year was the revival of the historic Fanti Carnival held in April 2025 at the Remembrance Arcade, Lagos Island. The event celebrated the Afro-Brazilian heritage of returnees from the 19th century, featuring vibrant Samba dances, capoeira performances, and cultural exhibitions that attracted wide local and international attention.

To improve regulation and safety within the hospitality and tourism sectors, the Lagos State Government is also finalizing a comprehensive Hotel Registration Platform. This initiative will cover all accommodation and entertainment venues including hotels, Airbnbs, nightclubs, beaches, and restaurants, with certificates from the platform becoming mandatory for operation.

The investment underscores Lagos State’s commitment to fostering a thriving creative economy, preserving cultural heritage, and enhancing the state’s appeal as a leading destination for tourism and entertainment in Africa.
