Lagosians Cast Ballots to Elect Local Government Chairmen, Councillors

Lagos, July 12, 2025 – Residents of Lagos State trooped out on Saturday to participate in the long-awaited local government elections to elect chairmen and councillors across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

The elections, supervised by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), began as early as 8:00 a.m. in many polling units, with voters undergoing accreditation before casting their votes. Election materials arrived early in several locations, and electoral officers were seen conducting the exercise under the watchful eyes of party agents and security operatives.

Security across the state was beefed up, with heavy presence of police and other law enforcement agencies deployed to ensure orderliness and prevent electoral violence. The Lagos State Police Command had earlier announced movement restrictions from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to maintain security and facilitate smooth electoral conduct.

While voter turnout varied across different LGAs, electoral officers reported a largely peaceful process in most areas. Some polling units recorded early arrivals of voters eager to participate, while others witnessed a slow start, which improved as the day progressed.

Prominent figures, including top government officials and political leaders, were seen casting their votes in their respective polling units. The Lagos State Government had also urged citizens to exercise their civic duty by participating in the elections to strengthen democratic governance at the grassroots level.

Vote counting and collation of results are expected to commence immediately after the close of polls, with final outcomes to be announced by LASIEC.
