The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has commenced the removal of illegal structures across the state following the expiration of the amnesty period granted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
This development was announced on the official website of LASBCA on Monday, confirming that enforcement actions began in Ogudu GRA. Officials moved in to ensure compliance with the state’s urban planning regulations after the extended amnesty period ended on December 31, 2024.
Government’s Stance on Illegal Structures
According to the Permanent Secretary of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, the enforcement drive aims to restore order to the state’s physical planning landscape and ensure public safety.
“The Lagos State Government provided ample time for property owners with illegal structures to obtain necessary approvals and comply with state building regulations,” Oki stated.
He noted that several notices had been issued before enforcement actions were initiated. “Unfortunately, some residents refused to comply, leaving the agency no choice but to take decisive action to reclaim public spaces and prevent potential building collapses,” he added.
Ongoing Demolition Exercise
The enforcement drive is expected to extend to other parts of Lagos as the government intensifies efforts to sanitize the built environment. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of eliminating unauthorized structures, preventing environmental degradation, and ensuring the safety of residents.
Oki emphasized that the agency remains committed to enforcing compliance with Lagos State’s urban planning laws. “The government is resolute in its vision to maintain a well-structured and safe urban environment in line with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s developmental agenda,” he said.
Warnings and Compliance Directives
LASBCA reiterated its warning to property owners and developers across the state to adhere strictly to building regulations to avoid facing similar demolition actions. Responding to concerns that the exercise was abrupt, Oki clarified that the decision followed extensive consultations, notices, and repeated warnings to defaulters.
“The agency ensured that all affected buildings were marked well in advance, and notices were issued months ago, providing clear compliance directives,” he explained.
Background on Amnesty Programme
The amnesty programme, introduced in 2024, granted a 90-day window from May 2 to July 30, allowing owners and developers of unapproved structures to obtain planning permits without incurring statutory penalties. Due to high application rates, Governor Sanwo-Olu extended the amnesty by another three months, from August 1 to October 31, 2024, to accommodate more property owners.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, had emphasized that the extension was a final opportunity for compliance. Despite these efforts, many property owners failed to regularize their documents, prompting LASBCA’s enforcement action.
Next Steps for Property Owners
The Lagos State Government has advised all property owners to ensure compliance with building regulations, as the enforcement drive will continue across various parts of the state. The authorities have reassured residents that due process will be followed in all demolition exercises, with a focus on upholding urban development standards and ensuring public safety.
As demolition operations proceed, LASBCA has urged stakeholders to engage with relevant authorities to secure proper documentation and avoid legal consequences.
