LASG Favours Previous Occupants in Alaba Transnational Market Shop Allocation

 June 14, 2025

The Lagos State Government has announced that shop allocations at the rebuilt Alaba Transnational Market will prioritize previous occupants, following a verification and revalidation exercise.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, disclosed this during a media briefing on Friday, stating that the state government is committed to fairness and continuity for traders affected by recent restructuring efforts.

“We recognise the contributions of long-time traders to the economic vibrancy of the Alaba Market. This decision is to ensure that those who were legally occupying shops before the demolition are not displaced,” Olumide said.

According to the commissioner, the allocation process will be guided by verified documentation and stakeholder engagement. He assured that due diligence is being carried out to avoid illegal racketeering and to maintain orderliness.

Some traders have applauded the decision, describing it as a relief after months of uncertainty, while others urged the government to speed up the process and ensure transparency in the exercise.

The Alaba Transnational Market, one of West Africa’s largest electronics hubs, has been undergoing a major redevelopment to improve safety, infrastructure, and compliance with state planning regulations.
