In a captivating display of skill and strategy, eight-time Women’s Champions League winners Lyon secured a resounding 4-1 victory over Bayern Munich, cementing their spot in the semi-finals.
The French powerhouse, led by manager Joe Montemurro, carried a 2-0 lead from the first leg into Wednesday’s match at Groupama Stadium. Despite missing several early opportunities, Lyon’s persistence paid off in the second half, as they scored four unanswered goals to seal a 6-1 aggregate win.
Bayern Munich’s Klara Buhl briefly silenced the home crowd with a well-placed low drive, but Lyon’s Melchie Dumornay wasted no time in restoring their two-goal advantage, heading home Kadidiatou Diani’s cross just 27 seconds into the second half.
The floodgates opened as Diani’s speed and agility proved too much for the Bayern defense. She sidefooted a first-time finish past Maria Luisa Grohs, then provided the assist for Tabitha Chawinga’s close-range strike. Ada Hegerberg put the icing on the cake with a late goal, sealing Lyon’s 14th semi-final appearance.
The stage is now set for a thrilling semi-final showdown between Lyon and Arsenal, who staged a remarkable comeback against Real Madrid. The two-legged tie promises to be an electrifying encounter, with Montemurro facing his former side. The semi-final matches will take place on April 19-20 and 26-27.
