Masquerades Invade Mosque, Assault Imam’s Family Members in Ondo; Muslim Community Demands Justice

Akure, Ondo State | June 16, 2025 –
Tension flared in the Oke-Aro area of Ondo town, Ondo State, after a group of masqueraders reportedly invaded a mosque during prayer hours and assaulted family members of the mosque’s imam, sparking outrage among the Muslim community.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, allegedly saw the masqueraders force their way into the worship centre and physically attack those present, including relatives of the imam. Eyewitnesses say the attackers disrupted prayers and beat up several individuals, including women and children.

Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Muslim Welfare Board described the attack as “an unprovoked and sacrilegious violation of religious rights.” A spokesperson for the board condemned the act and called on the state government and security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We consider this a grave assault not only on the individuals involved but on the entire Muslim community in Ondo State,” the spokesperson said. “No religion should be subjected to intimidation or violence.”

In response, the Ondo State Police Command confirmed that an investigation is underway and promised to ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.

The incident has drawn wide criticism from Islamic organisations including the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), which urged state authorities to ensure the protection of worshippers across all faiths and prevent further escalation of inter-religious tensions.

As of Monday morning, calm has been restored to the area, but religious leaders are calling for increased dialogue and tolerance between faith communities to prevent a recurrence.
