Mikaela Mayer Retains Title with Unanimous Decision Over Sandy Ryan

World champion Mikaela Mayer successfully defended her WBO welterweight title against British challenger Sandy Ryan, winning by unanimous decision in Las Vegas.

Mayer, 34, dominated the middle rounds with her high punch output, shot selection, and body work, ultimately securing the win with scores of 97-93, 97-93, and 98-92.

The American’s victory marked her second win over Ryan, following their first encounter in September, which was marred by controversy when Ryan was hit with a can of red paint before the fight.

Mayer’s win extends her record to 21 wins from 23 bouts, and she has now set her sights on an undisputed fight against Welsh boxer Lauren Price, who holds the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles.

“I thought it was close. I thought I was doing well into the start, and then I got into a fight,” Mayer said. “The women are getting better and better – me and Sandy just set the new bar on what competitive fights should look like.”

Ryan, 31, put up a strong fight, but ultimately came up short. She has now lost two close encounters against Mayer, but has proven herself to be a top-level fighter.

Mayer’s next move will be a highly anticipated one, with a potential undisputed fight against Price on the horizon. The bout could take place in the US or the UK, potentially in Cardiff.
