MTN’s New Lagos Data Centre Gets World-Class ‘Tier III’ Stamp of Approval

LAGOS, Nigeria – In a major boost for Nigeria’s digital economy, MTN Nigeria has announced that its powerful new data centre in Lagos has received a prestigious international certification for being ultra-reliable and resilient.

The facility, known as the Dabengwa Data Centre, has been awarded the Tier III Certification for Constructed Facility by the Uptime Institute, a global authority on data centre standards. This means the centre has been rigorously tested and proven to be among the most dependable in the world.

Built from 96 prefabricated containers and opened just in July, the centre is a technological marvel. It uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimise energy use and boasts hybrid cloud features, all designed to give businesses uninterrupted service.

The CEO of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, celebrated the achievement, calling it a testament to hard work and strategic focus. “It reflects our commitment to building top-tier infrastructure that supports Nigeria’s digital future,” he said.

So, what does this mean for the average Nigerian business? Essentially, near-perfect uptime. A Tier III certification guarantees 99.982% availability, which translates to a maximum of just 1.6 hours of potential downtime in an entire year. This is crucial for banks, tech companies, and other enterprises that cannot afford their digital services to fail.

The certification ensures there are multiple, independent backups for power and cooling systems. This allows for routine maintenance to be carried out without having to shut down services that depend on the centre.

This achievement makes the Dabengwa Data Centre one of only four such facilities in the entire country to hold this dual certification, having also previously received the Tier III certification for its design.

This milestone is a key part of MTN’s larger plan, known as the ‘Ambition 2025 Strategy’, which focuses on building strong digital foundations for Nigeria. It signals MTN’s continued push to lead the charge in providing the infrastructure needed to power the nation’s growing online ecosystem.
