Lagos | September 14, 2025 — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert warning consumers about the presence of a harmful chemical, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, in certain Dove soaps and deodorants.
The agency explained that the chemical, commonly used in fragrances, has been identified as potentially dangerous, with studies linking prolonged exposure to skin irritation, hormonal disruption, and reproductive health risks.
According to NAFDAC, the affected products were detected during routine surveillance and cross-border safety checks. The agency urged Nigerians to exercise caution, carefully check product labels, and immediately stop using any Dove items found to contain the banned substance.
Consumers were also advised to report suspicious products to NAFDAC through its official communication channels, including the Med-Safety App, while importers and distributors have been warned of strict penalties for circulating unsafe items.
NAFDAC reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding health, stressing that continuous monitoring of cosmetics and personal care products is ongoing to prevent harmful substances from reaching consumers
