NAHCON Chairman Mourns 16 Travellers Killed in Edo, Commends Tinubu’s Swift Response –

The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Saleh, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic killing of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State.

In a statement issued on Friday, Professor Sale extended his heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the bereaved families, and the entire nation over the unfortunate incident, which occurred on March 27, 2025, in the Undune Efandion community of Uromi.

The NAHCON chairman emphasized the need for unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, stressing that national development can only be achieved when citizens see each other as brothers and sisters, regardless of ethnic or religious differences.

“Nigeria is a diverse country, and it is high time we embraced one another as one people. The protection of innocent lives should remain a priority in all parts of the country,” Professor Sale said.

He lauded President Tinubu for swiftly ordering security agencies to track down the perpetrators of the heinous act. According to reports, 14 suspects have already been arrested in connection with the killings.

“At this juncture, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserves commendation from all Nigerians for his prompt action. His response reflects exemplary leadership and dedication to the security and progress of the nation,” he added.

Professor Sale prayed for the souls of the victims, asking Allah to grant them Jannatul Firdaus and to give their families the strength to bear the loss.

NAHCON Assures Pilgrims of Smooth 2025 Hajj
Meanwhile, Professor Sale reaffirmed NAHCON’s commitment to ensuring a seamless Hajj operation in 2025. He disclosed that the commission recently assessed the preparedness of key Hajj service providers during an official visit to Saudi Arabia.

“We are putting all necessary arrangements in place to ensure that every Nigerian pilgrim enjoys efficient services throughout the 2025 Hajj exercise. During our visit to Saudi Arabia, we inspected materials designed for use by Nigerian pilgrims and assessed service providers to guarantee a smooth experience,” he stated.

The NAHCON chairman assured intending pilgrims that the commission would not relent in its efforts to deliver excellent services, while also appreciating Vice President Kashim Shettima for his unwavering support to the commission.

Call for Peace and Sacrifice Ahead of Eid-el-Fitr
Ahead of the upcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, Professor Sale urged Nigerians to use the occasion as a time for reflection, sacrifice, love, and peace.

“Eid-el-Fitr is a period of gratitude and renewal. Let us use this time to strengthen our bond as a nation and uphold the values of tolerance and unity,” he said.

The tragic killing in Edo State has sparked nationwide concern over security challenges, with many calling for justice and stricter measures to curb such acts. As investigations continue, Nigerians look forward to seeing the full weight of the law applied to those responsible.
