The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to international airlines regarding the rising complaints from Nigerian passengers who are transported partway to their destinations, only to be deported back to Nigeria. The NCAA condemned this practice, noting the significant distress it causes passengers and the negative impact it has on the reputation of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
In a statement signed by Michael Achimugu, the NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, the authority expressed its deep concern over the increasing number of passengers being denied entry at transit stops due to visa and travel restrictions. The statement, issued on Thursday, described such actions as “completely unacceptable.”
Achimugu stressed that airlines are responsible for informing passengers about any potential obstacles to entry before they embark on their journey. He reiterated that passengers should never be left in a position where they are denied entry or forced to return to Nigeria upon arrival at a transit point.
Referring to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), the NCAA reminded airlines that they are obligated to provide passengers with clear and accurate information about any potential entry restrictions before departure. “Airlines must ensure they screen and provide travelers with up-to-date details about visa requirements and travel documents before issuing tickets or permitting boarding,” the statement emphasized.
In response to the growing number of complaints, the NCAA announced immediate enforcement measures. “Effective immediately, any airline found engaging in such practices will face regulatory action, including fines, suspension of flight operations, or other penalties deemed appropriate,” Achimugu warned.
The NCAA urged all airlines to cooperate fully in maintaining the professionalism and integrity of the aviation industry while ensuring the wellbeing of Nigerian passengers. The authority’s statement concluded with a call for airlines to take the necessary steps to prevent the mistreatment of passengers traveling to and from Nigeria.
