The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the seizure of a massive 2,687 tonnes of cannabis sativa in Cross River State, in what authorities described as one of the largest drug interceptions in recent times.
According to a statement by the NDLEA spokesperson, the illicit consignment was uncovered during a special operation conducted by operatives acting on credible intelligence. The raid, which took place in a densely forested area of Obubra Local Government Area, led to the discovery of multiple warehouses stocked with processed cannabis intended for distribution across various states.
The operation also resulted in the arrest of three suspects believed to be part of a major drug trafficking syndicate operating in the region. NDLEA officials confirmed that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the network and to trace the supply chain.
Chairman of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd.), commended the operatives for their vigilance and reiterated the agency’s unwavering commitment to stemming the tide of drug abuse and trafficking in the country.
He also appealed to community leaders and citizens to collaborate with the agency by providing actionable information that could help curb the menace of narcotics in their areas.
The seizure comes amid heightened efforts by the NDLEA to curb drug production and trafficking, particularly as Nigeria remains a key transit and consumer point in West Africa’s narcotics trade.
