Nigeria, African Union Sign Strategic MoU to Strengthen Counter-Terrorism Efforts

Abuja, Nigeria | September 8, 2025

The National Counterterrorism Centre (NCTC) of Nigeria has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the African Union (AU), creating a new framework for collaboration in combating terrorism and violent extremism across the continent.

The agreement, sealed on Monday, is designed to enhance cooperation in intelligence-sharing, policy coordination, and capacity building among African states. Under the MoU, the AU will leverage Nigeria’s extensive counter-terrorism experience, particularly in the areas of research on terrorism, victim support and recovery, as well as deradicalization and reintegration of former extremists.

Officials noted that the pact is a strategic step towards strengthening Africa’s collective response to security threats posed by terror groups, which continue to destabilize several regions. Nigeria, having battled Boko Haram and its offshoots for over a decade, is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping continental strategies through this partnership.

Security experts welcomed the development, stressing that a united African front is crucial in tackling transnational terrorism networks that thrive on porous borders and weak institutional cooperation.
