Nigeria, Brazil Strengthen Ties at Gala Dinner Hosted by Vice President Shettima

ABUJA — In a renewed display of diplomatic warmth and strategic partnership, Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday evening hosted the Vice President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, H.E. Geraldo Alckmin, his wife, Maria Lúcia Alckmin, and other senior members of the Brazilian delegation to a Nigeria-Brazil Gala Dinner at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

The high-level dinner formed part of the activities marking the Second Session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM), a bilateral engagement designed to foster stronger cooperation in trade, investment, culture, and technology between the two leading economies in Africa and Latin America.

The occasion brought together top Nigerian government officials, diplomats, and private sector leaders, all of whom underscored the importance of deepening mutual ties in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

In his remarks, Vice President Shettima described the engagement as a testament to the long-standing friendship between both nations and reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to explore opportunities for shared prosperity and south-south cooperation.

“Our two nations, rich in culture and human capital, must build bridges across sectors that will benefit our people and the world at large,” Shettima said. “This dinner reflects our collective desire to advance meaningful dialogue and deliver tangible outcomes.”

In response, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s hospitality and emphasized Brazil’s commitment to strengthening ties with Africa through Nigeria as a strategic gateway. He noted that ongoing discussions under the SDM will open doors for increased collaboration in energy, agriculture, education, and health.

The gala also featured cultural performances that showcased Nigeria’s rich heritage and highlighted the shared values of diversity, resilience, and innovation that connect both countries.

Observers say the event is expected to build momentum for upcoming agreements and memoranda of understanding being negotiated under the bilateral mechanism.

The Nigeria-Brazil SDM, which was inaugurated in 2023, is aimed at institutionalizing high-level consultation and promoting cooperation in priority sectors for sustainable development.
