Nigeria Customs Cautions Travellers on Responsible Use of U.S. Visas

Abuja | July 30, 2025

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a strong advisory to Nigerian travellers, urging them to exercise caution and responsibility in the use of United States visas to avoid jeopardizing diplomatic relations and personal travel opportunities.

The advisory comes in response to growing concerns over cases of visa misuse, including overstaying, engaging in unapproved activities, and misrepresentation by some Nigerian nationals abroad. The NCS emphasized that such conduct not only risks personal consequences, such as visa bans or deportation, but also affects the international reputation of the country.

Customs authorities reminded travellers that U.S. visas are granted strictly for the purpose specified in each application, whether tourism, business, education, or medical, and that deviation from these terms constitutes a breach of immigration law.

“We urge all Nigerian travellers to honour the conditions attached to their U.S. visas. Any misuse can result in severe penalties, including revocation of visas, denial of future applications, and legal actions abroad,” a senior Customs official stated.

The NCS also warned that frequent reports of visa infractions could influence U.S. immigration policy towards Nigerian applicants, potentially leading to stricter vetting processes or broader restrictions.

Travellers were advised to seek accurate travel guidance, avoid agents offering illegal shortcuts, and remain fully compliant with visa requirements at all stages of their journey.

The Customs Service pledged continued collaboration with immigration authorities and foreign missions to promote lawful travel and uphold Nigeria’s global standing.
