The Federal Government, through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has unveiled the Nigerian Data Exchange Platform (NGDX), a system designed to streamline citizen data management and eliminate repeated submissions across multiple government agencies.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja on Monday, NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa said the NGDX would serve as a secure and unified data exchange platform that allows government institutions to seamlessly share and verify information.
“With NGDX, Nigerians will no longer need to repeatedly hand over the same personal data each time they interact with an MDA. Authorised agencies will be able to verify and share records on the backend,” Inuwa said.
Beyond convenience, the platform is also expected to support innovation. By enabling the use of anonymised public data, the NGDX will create opportunities for startups and enterprises in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, fintech, and education technology.
The project forms part of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure strategy, which focuses on interoperability, secure APIs, real-time data exchange, and adherence to global privacy standards. It has also attracted international collaboration, with support from the European Union’s Global Gateway initiative and technical input from Finland, Estonia, Germany, and France.
NITDA said the initiative would address long-standing challenges of fragmented data collection systems — ranging from NIN, BVN, driver’s licence, SIM registration, to passport issuance — and help government institutions deliver more efficient, citizen-centric services.
However, while the rollout has been welcomed, details on implementation timelines, governance structures, and data privacy safeguards have yet to be disclosed.
