Nigeria Police on High Alert Ahead of April 7 Nationwide Protest

In anticipation of a nationwide protest scheduled for April 7, 2025, the Lagos State Police Command has issued a directive alerting all officers within its jurisdiction. This move comes following intelligence reports indicating that various groups, masquerading as civil society organizations, are planning to mobilize protests across Nigeria. The protests aim to highlight issues such as the high cost of living and the suppression of free speech, which have been contentious topics in recent times.

The Take It Back Movement, led by activist Omoyele Sowore, is one of the key organizers of the protest. They have been vocal about the government’s use of the Cybercrime Act to silence critics, activists, and journalists. The movement has consistently called for the repeal of this act, arguing that it creates an environment of fear and censorship. The protest is set to take place in multiple locations, including Oyo State, where participants will gather at Iwo Road in Ibadan at 8:00 AM.

The police have expressed concerns that the protests could be exploited by criminals to cause chaos, particularly targeting government facilities and opposition leaders. This concern is not unfounded, given past instances where protests have been marred by violence and attacks on journalists. In recent protests, journalists have faced harassment and assault by security forces, highlighting the risks associated with covering such events. Despite these challenges, the police are expected to maintain order while respecting the constitutional right to peaceful protest.

The nationwide protest also draws attention to broader issues of governance and economic hardship in Nigeria. The organizers are demanding an end to what they describe as “bad governance” and the misuse of emergency powers in certain states. The protest is part of a larger movement seeking reforms and accountability from the government. As the April 7 protest approaches, both the organizers and the authorities are bracing for potential confrontations, with the police emphasizing the need for security and public safety
