In a significant move aimed at bolstering the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, has proposed extending the mandatory service year from one to two years. This initiative, unveiled during a courtesy visit by the new NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, in Abuja, seeks to enhance the skills and entrepreneurial capabilities of corps members.
The proposed extension is designed to allow for a more comprehensive implementation of the NYSC’s Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program. By expanding this training, the minister aims to equip young Nigerians with the tools necessary to become job creators rather than job seekers, thereby contributing more effectively to national development and addressing the country’s unemployment challenges.
Dr. Alausa commended the NYSC for its digital reforms, which have successfully reduced certificate racketeering among foreign-trained graduates. He also addressed the ongoing issue of part-time National Diploma (ND) graduates with Higher National Diplomas (HND) who were previously exempted from national service, advocating for their inclusion in the NYSC framework.
The NYSC Director-General expressed support for the proposal, highlighting the organization’s commitment to youth development. Additionally, Brigadier General Nafiu suggested creating a database to track Nigerian youths studying abroad, which could enhance coordination efforts and inform policy decisions.
This proposal is expected to spark national discussions, with stakeholders weighing the potential benefits and challenges of an extended service period. If implemented, the changes could significantly impact the NYSC’s role in fostering entrepreneurship and reducing unemployment among young Nigerians.
