The Super Eagles of Nigeria reignited their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with a decisive 2-0 victory, marking a winning debut for newly appointed head coach Eric Chelle. Striker Victor Osimhen’s first-half brace at Kigali’s Huye Stadium propelled Nigeria to fourth place in Group C, breathing new life into their quest for a spot at the global tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Osimhen Shines in First-Half Masterclass
Galatasaray star Victor Osimhen, pivotal to Nigeria’s attack, struck twice before halftime to secure the crucial three points. The 25-year-old opened the scoring in the 11th minute, slotting home a low cross from Ademola Lookman, the reigning African Player of the Year. Osimhen doubled the lead in stoppage time, capitalizing on a headed assist from Samuel Chukwueze before deftly chipping the ball over Rwanda’s advancing goalkeeper.
Group C Standings Heat Up
The win lifts Nigeria to six points, though they remain fourth in a tightly contested group. Rwanda sit third with seven points, while Benin Republic (eight points) and South Africa (10 points) lead the race. South Africa solidified their top position with a 2-0 victory over Lesotho, while Benin Republic stumbled in a 2-2 draw against Zimbabwe.
Critical Fixtures Loom in June
The group’s fate will hinge on Matchday 6 clashes in few days time. South Africa face Benin Republic in Abidjan in a showdown between the top two teams, while Nigeria host Zimbabwe in Uyo, aiming to leverage home support. Rwanda, meanwhile, will seek redemption against Lesotho in Maseru.
Road Ahead for Super Eagles
Though Chelle’s tenure begins on a high, Nigeria must maintain momentum to close the gap. With four qualifiers remaining, including home matches against Zimbabwe and Benin, the three-time African champions face a stern test of consistency.
The top finisher in each CAF qualifying group secures automatic World Cup qualification, while the four best runners-up enter a playoff round. Nigeria last missed the World Cup in 2022 and will aim to avoid a repeat under Chelle’s leadership.
The Super Eagles return to action on Tuesday 25th March, 2025, against Zimbabwe at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
