Nigeria Urges Timely Ratification of High Seas Treaty, Seeks Increased Funding for Developing Nations

Nice, France – June 11, 2025

Nigeria has called on member states of the United Nations to expedite the ratification of the High Seas Treaty and significantly scale up financial support for developing countries in the fight to protect ocean ecosystems.

The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, H.E. Gboyega Oyetola, made the call while addressing delegates at the United Nations Ocean Conference held in Nice, France. He stressed the importance of collaborative global action in tackling threats such as marine pollution, overfishing, and climate change impacts on coastal nations.

“Prompt ratification and implementation of the High Seas Treaty are critical for the protection of ocean biodiversity beyond national jurisdictions,” Oyetola said. “We also urge stronger international financial commitments to support sustainable blue economies in developing nations.”

The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s strides in marine conservation and blue economy development, including policy reforms, investments in port infrastructure, and support for coastal communities.

He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) and called on stakeholders to align efforts in securing the world’s oceans for future generations.

The UN Ocean Conference continues through the week, drawing leaders, experts, and advocates from across the globe to address critical maritime challenges.
