Nigerian Shippers’ Council Commends Firm for Removing Container Deposit Charges

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has praised CMA CGM Nigeria Shipping Limited for scrapping container deposit charges on all new bookings, effective from May 21, 2025. This decision was welcomed as a positive development aimed at improving the shipping experience in Nigeria.

According to the NSC, the removal of container deposit fees will help reduce the financial burden on shippers and encourage smoother operations within the maritime sector. The council described the move as a significant step toward enhancing transparency, promoting fair trade practices, and boosting competitiveness at Nigerian ports.

CMA CGM cited customer feedback as a key factor behind the policy change, emphasizing its commitment to providing efficient and customer-friendly shipping services. The NSC has called on other shipping lines operating in the country to consider similar measures to support the growth and modernization of Nigeria’s maritime industry.

This initiative is expected to reduce disputes over container deposits, facilitate easier trade, and contribute to ongoing reforms designed to strengthen Nigeria’s logistics and shipping environment.
