Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Hopes Dim After Shock Draw Against Zimbabwe

Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a major setback after the Super Eagles were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday.

The three-time African champions struggled to break down Zimbabwe’s defense for much of the match until Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 74th minute. The Galatasaray striker met with Ola Aina’s pinpoint cross with a powering header to put the ball into the net to send the home crowd into wild celebrations.

However, Nigeria’s joy was short-lived as Zimbabwe’s T. Chirewa stunned the hosts with a dramatic equalizer in stoppage time (90+ minutes), leaving the Super Eagles with just a point from the encounter.

Group C Standings Worsen Nigeria’s Qualification Chances
The result leaves Nigeria in a precarious position in Group C, now sitting in fourth place with just seven points from five matches. South Africa strengthened their lead at the top with a 2-0 victory over Benin Republic, taking them to 13 points. Meanwhile, Benin Republic and Rwanda are tied on eight points each after Rwanda played out a 1-1 draw with Lesotho.

With only the group winner guaranteed automatic qualification, Nigeria’s hopes now hang by a thread. Even a playoff spot seems unlikely unless the Super Eagles win all remaining matches and other results go their way.

What’s Next for the Super Eagles?
Nigeria’s next match will be crucial as they face Rwanda in a must-win encounter in June. Anything less than victory could officially end their World Cup dreams.

For now, the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico looks increasingly difficult for the Super Eagles.
