Tokyo, Japan | September 20, 2025

Nigeria’s 400 metres hurdles sensation, Ezekiel Nathaniel, delivered a historic performance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, breaking his own national record despite narrowly missing out on a medal.

The 22-year-old clocked 47.11 seconds in Friday’s final, surpassing his previous record of 47.31 seconds set earlier this year.

His fourth-place finish makes him the first Nigerian since Henry Amike in 1987 to reach the final of the men’s 400 metres hurdles at the World Championships.

Speaking after the race, Nathaniel expressed optimism that his achievement would inspire young athletes across Nigeria.

“I hope this performance will inspire young Nigerian athletes,” he said. “This is a great opportunity to learn from the world’s best athletes.”

Nathaniel’s feat marks a significant milestone for Nigerian athletics, highlighting the nation’s growing presence on the global stage.
