NIMC Rolls Out Strict Access Policy for NIN Modification Portal

Abuja, Nigeria | August 7, 2025

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has implemented a stricter access control policy for users of its National Identification Number (NIN) self-service modification portal, in a move aimed at curbing identity fraud and strengthening data security.

According to a statement released by the commission, the new policy introduces multiple layers of verification for individuals seeking to update personal information such as names, dates of birth, and addresses on the NIN database. These measures include compulsory biometric validation, enhanced document scrutiny, and time-bound access credentials.

NIMC officials noted that the self-service portal had faced misuse and manipulation attempts, prompting the need for tighter regulations. “The security of Nigeria’s digital identity infrastructure is paramount,” the commission said. “This policy will ensure that only rightful owners of NINs can initiate sensitive modifications.”

Under the new framework, users must now undergo facial recognition or fingerprint revalidation before gaining access to modification features. Additionally, service agents and partner institutions are required to comply with upgraded audit protocols and system monitoring standards.

The commission assured that while the changes might introduce slight delays for users, they are essential for the integrity of the national identity system. It also advised Nigerians to avoid using third-party vendors for NIN updates and instead rely on official NIMC channels to avoid falling victim to fraudsters.

As the Federal Government continues to digitize public services and harmonize identity records nationwide, the NIMC’s latest move signals a tougher stance on data protection and a renewed commitment to safeguarding citizens’ identity information.
