NiMet Forecasts Nationwide Rainfall, Thunderstorms from Sunday Through Tuesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather advisory, projecting a series of rain showers and thunderstorms across various parts of the country beginning Sunday and extending through Tuesday. The forecast, which covers a broad range of states from the northern to southern regions, is part of the agency’s continuous effort to provide timely and accurate meteorological updates to guide public safety and planning.

According to the latest weather outlook released by NiMet, Nigerians should brace for moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in several cities including Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Enugu, Jos, and Maiduguri. The forecast warns of potential flash floods in flood-prone areas, particularly in the southern and middle belt regions where the soil has already reached high saturation levels due to previous downpours.

NiMet explained that the prevailing weather pattern is influenced by the ongoing movement of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which typically brings increased moisture into the country during this peak period of the rainy season. The agency advised residents, farmers, and local authorities to take necessary precautions as strong winds, lightning, and heavy rain may disrupt transportation, damage infrastructure, or affect agricultural activities.

In parts of the North Central, including Niger, Kogi, and Benue states, thunderstorms are expected to be intense, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Meanwhile, coastal areas such as Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River may witness longer spells of rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, potentially affecting marine activities and causing delays at seaports.

NiMet also urged local governments to activate early warning systems and ensure proper drainage maintenance to reduce the risk of urban flooding. Motorists are advised to avoid driving through waterlogged roads, while outdoor event organizers and construction sites have been cautioned to monitor weather updates closely to prevent disruptions or accidents.

As climate variability continues to influence weather patterns across West Africa, the agency reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate, science-based weather predictions in real-time. NiMet called on the public to stay tuned to its official communication channels, including radio, mobile apps, and online platforms, for regular updates and emergency alerts.

The forecast is consistent with the agency’s 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) released earlier in the year, which projected above-average rainfall across many states, coupled with isolated extreme weather events. While the rains are vital for agriculture and water supply, NiMet emphasized the need for proactive preparedness to mitigate the risks associated with intense weather conditions.
