NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms and Dust Haze Across Seven States from Sunday to Tuesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting thunderstorms and hazy conditions in various parts of Nigeria from Sunday through Tuesday.

According to a weather update shared on Saturday, NiMet indicated that regions such as Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Kano, Yobe, and Jigawa would experience moderate dust haze. This weather pattern is expected to cause reduced visibility in these areas.

In addition, NiMet forecasts isolated thunderstorms in Adamawa and Taraba states during the period. For the North-Central region, the weather agency expects partly cloudy skies in the morning, with isolated thunderstorms likely in the afternoon and evening. Areas such as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue states may experience these weather conditions.

In the southern parts of the country, NiMet predicts thunderstorms in the morning, particularly in Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom states. Thunderstorms will spread to other parts of the south as the day progresses.

On Monday, NiMet expects generally sunny skies in northern Nigeria, although some areas, including Taraba and Adamawa states, could see morning thunderstorms. By the afternoon, thunderstorms are likely to extend to states like Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe.

In the North-Central region on Monday, NiMet predicts thunderstorms in Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue states in the morning, with more storms anticipated in the afternoon and evening. The southern part of the country will also experience thunderstorms, with Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Edo states being among the most affected in the morning, followed by rain across other southern states later in the day.

By Tuesday, the forecast indicates mostly sunny weather in the north, with some cloud cover. Thunderstorms are expected to affect parts of Adamawa and Taraba states in the morning. Thunderstorms may also spread to parts of Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba later in the day. The North-Central region will experience partly cloudy skies in the morning, with thunderstorms likely in the afternoon and evening in states like the FCT, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Niger.

The southern regions are expected to see morning thunderstorms in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa states, followed by additional thunderstorms in various parts of the south later in the day.

NiMet has urged the public to exercise caution, particularly in areas expected to experience thunderstorms, as strong winds are likely to precede rainfall. The agency also warned residents of northern states to be cautious due to the dust haze that could affect air quality.

For those traveling by air, NiMet advised airline operators to obtain updated weather information to ensure safe flight planning amid the weather conditions.
