The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide weather forecast, warning of persistent thunderstorms and rainfall expected to affect most parts of the country over a three-day period beginning Sunday, June 9, 2025.
In its latest weather outlook, NiMet stated that various regions, especially in the northern, central, and southern parts of the country, will experience significant rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds, and possible localised flooding.
According to the forecast:
On Sunday, morning thunderstorms are anticipated in parts of Taraba and Adamawa, while the afternoon and evening may see widespread thunderstorms across Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Gombe, and Bauchi. The North Central region, including the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau, is expected to witness cloudiness and rain. In the South, showers are likely in Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Edo, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa.
On Monday, morning thunderstorms will likely hit Sokoto, Zamfara, and Bauchi, with conditions worsening later in Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, Kano, Borno, Jigawa, and Kaduna. Central Nigeria, particularly FCT, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Niger, may experience early showers, while afternoon and evening storms are expected in Kwara, Plateau, and Benue. Coastal states, including Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom, may also see light rain.
By Tuesday, isolated morning thunderstorms may occur in Zamfara and Kaduna, with further development across Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, and Borno. Afternoon and evening rainstorms are expected in FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Kwara, and Plateau, while Bayelsa and Lagos may experience morning and evening rainfall.
NiMet has urged the public to exercise caution during this period, warning that strong winds preceding the thunderstorms could cause damage to structures and trees, while flooding may occur in low-lying areas. The agency has also advised residents to avoid outdoor activities during storms, secure loose items, and unplug electrical appliances when necessary.
For aviation and transport sectors, NiMet stressed the importance of staying informed with up-to-date weather reports to ensure passenger safety and minimise delays.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to delivering timely and accurate weather forecasts to help Nigerians plan their daily activities and mitigate the impact of adverse weather.
