Northern Elites Condemn Plateau Killings, Urge Swift Action for Peace

In a strong show of solidarity with the people of Plateau State, the League of Northern Democrats (LND) has vehemently condemned the recent massacre of 52 innocent lives in Bokkos Local Government Area. The group, comprising prominent northern elites, described the attacks as a barbaric act of cruelty and criminality that deeply violates human rights. This tragic event has not only shocked the conscience of humanity but also highlighted the urgent need for immediate government intervention to address the escalating insecurity in the Bokkos-Mangu axis.

The LND, through its spokesperson, Dr. Ladan Salihu, emphasized the importance of swift action to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the heinous crime. The group believes that justice must prevail to bring closure to the families of the victims and restore peace to the affected communities. In a statement, the LND extended its deepest condolences to the government and people of Plateau State, expressing solidarity with those who have been devastated by the tragedy. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the government, the people of Plateau State, and all those affected by this heinous tragedy,” the statement read.

The recent attacks in Plateau State are part of a broader pattern of violence that has plagued the Middle Belt region, fueled by ethno-religious tensions and weak security infrastructure. Despite intermittent peace efforts, rural communities continue to face high civilian casualties with limited arrests. The LND has warned that without radical security measures, Plateau risks becoming a new epicenter of violence in Nigeria. Therefore, the group is calling on the federal government to allocate sufficient resources to enhance security operations in the region, ensuring the protection of citizens and preventing further bloodshed.

In light of these developments, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has also condemned the attacks, describing them as genocide against the Plateau natives rather than mere farmer-herder clashes. He emphasized the state’s commitment to fighting insecurity and urged the international community to take note of the atrocities. The Christian Association of Nigeria in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory has also condemned the killings, demanding government action to apprehend the perpetrators.

As the situation unfolds, there is a growing consensus among civil society groups and security analysts that proactive policing and intelligence are crucial to preventing such tragedies. The Plateau State Government has initiated a coordinated security response, but more needs to be done to restore peace and stability to the region. The LND’s call for urgent action underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between local and federal authorities to address the deep-seated security challenges in Plateau State and ensure lasting peace for its people.
