The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has made a significant breakthrough in its fight against illegal mining activities in Adamawa State. The Adamawa State Command of the NSCDC recently seized 266 bags of precious stones, including 225 bags of fluorite and 41 bags of monazite, from illicit mining operations in Dumne, Song, and Michika Local Government Areas.
According to the command’s spokesman, Nyako Amidu Baba, the operation was part of a broader strategy to combat environmental degradation and revenue loss caused by illegal mining. To enhance enforcement, the state commandant, ID Bande, has retrained 100 personnel as mining marshals tasked with patrolling mining sites, arresting offenders, and confiscating illegally mined materials.
The NSCDC has vowed to continue its operations against illicit mining, with plans to increase surveillance and enforcement across mining areas in Adamawa. The command has urged local communities to collaborate by reporting illegal activities and advised the public to refrain from engaging in unlawful mining practices.
This seizure highlights the NSCDC’s commitment to addressing the economic and environmental impacts of illegal mining, which not only deprive the state of revenue but also lead to ecological damage. The operation serves as a warning to those involved in such activities, emphasizing the government’s determination to protect Nigeria’s natural resources and ensure sustainable development.
