NYSC Begins Disbursement of Outstanding Allowances to Corps Members After Two-Month Hiatus

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commenced the long-awaited payment of outstanding allowances to serving corps members across the country, following a two-month delay that had stirred widespread concern and speculation. This latest disbursement marks the first tranche of payment since the last allowance was credited to corps members on June 3, 2025.

Confirm by the several corps members have begun receiving their monthly stipends, popularly known as allawee, starting this week, signalling an end—at least temporarily—to the extended period of uncertainty regarding their financial entitlements. The NYSC’s resumed payment comes after weeks of silence from official quarters, during which time corps members took to various social media platforms to express frustration over the delay.
Sources within the scheme hinted that the delay was largely due to administrative bottlenecks and delayed financial releases from the federal government, amid ongoing fiscal adjustments following the new minimum wage proposal currently under review. However, there has been no official statement from the NYSC Directorate explaining the reasons behind the lapse in June and July payments.

The allowance, which currently stands at ₦33,000 per month, forms the primary financial support for corps members posted across Nigeria. For many, especially those serving in remote or underserved areas, the stipend is their only source of income during the compulsory one-year service. The sudden disruption of this payment placed a heavy burden on corps members, some of whom reported difficulties meeting basic needs, including transportation, feeding, and accommodation.

This renewed disbursement is seen by many observers as a step in the right direction, though questions remain about whether the backlogs from the missed months will be paid in full or staggered. Some corps members have reportedly received a single month’s allowance so far, while others are still awaiting alerts, raising concerns about whether the process will be completed uniformly across all states and batches.

As of the time of this report, the NYSC has not issued an official circular or press release addressing the resumed payments or clarifying when the remaining arrears will be fully cleared. However, corps members are advised to remain patient and monitor their bank accounts in the coming days as the process unfolds.

This development also comes at a time when discussions around corps members’ welfare, including possible upward reviews of their stipends, are gaining traction amidst broader economic reforms under the current administration.
