July 7, 2025 | Ibadan, Oyo State
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed on at the age of 89, marking the end of an era for the ancient city of Ibadan and the traditional institution in Oyo State.
Though official confirmation from the Oyo State Government and the Olubadan-in-Council is still being awaited, multiple palace sources and close associates revealed that the monarch died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday after a brief illness.
Oba Olakulehin, who ascended the throne earlier this year following the demise of Oba Lekan Balogun, was a respected elder statesman and cultural custodian. His short reign was marked by efforts to unify the Ibadan traditional hierarchy and promote community development.
A former military officer and accomplished businessman, Oba Olakulehin brought dignity and a wealth of experience to the throne. He was also widely respected for his humility and deep-rooted commitment to Ibadan’s socio-cultural heritage.
Tributes have started pouring in from traditional rulers, political leaders, and residents across Oyo State and Nigeria at large, praising his leadership, wisdom, and dedication to the advancement of Ibadanland.
The Oyo State Government is expected to make an official announcement soon and initiate traditional rites in line with Ibadan customs. His passing now paves the way for the selection of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, following the ancient and hierarchical system of succession unique to the Ibadan chieftaincy.
May his soul rest in peace.
