Oyo Govt Targets Improved Farming with New Agricultural Development Project

IBADAN — The Oyo State Government has unveiled plans to revolutionize the agricultural sector through the establishment of one-stop shops across various zones, aimed at making farming more profitable, modern, and accessible for smallholder farmers.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, disclosed this during a briefing, highlighting that the initiative is part of the state’s broader strategy to boost food security and rural development.

According to him, the project will serve as centralized hubs where farmers can easily access quality agricultural inputs, including seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals, and extension services. “These one-stop shops will be strategically located across the zones to enhance the dissemination of modern farming techniques, provide access to new agricultural technologies, and establish stronger market connections for our smallholder farmers,” he said.

Barr. Olaleye emphasized that the initiative is designed to empower local farmers with timely information, training, and resources that will improve productivity and market competitiveness. He also noted that the state government is working closely with stakeholders and development partners to ensure that the project is sustainable and impactful.

The Commissioner affirmed the state’s commitment to building a resilient agricultural economy that not only feeds the people but also creates jobs, reduces poverty, and contributes significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The development is coming at a time when Nigeria is facing rising concerns over food prices and the need for sustainable agricultural practices. Stakeholders in the sector have lauded the move, urging other states to replicate similar models to support grassroots farmers and scale up national food production.
