In a decisive move to restore discipline and promote a conducive learning environment, the Oyo State Government has launched a rigorous crackdown on hooliganism in schools across the state. Alongside this, authorities have introduced a strict ban on the use of mobile phones within school premises to curb distractions and prevent the escalation of disruptive behaviour among students.
The directive, issued by the State Ministry of Education, targets unruly conduct that has increasingly threatened the safety and academic focus in secondary schools. Reports of student violence, vandalism, and gang activities had raised alarms among parents, teachers, and government officials, prompting urgent intervention.
Under the new policy, all students are prohibited from carrying mobile phones during school hours, with violations attracting penalties ranging from confiscation to suspension. School administrators have been mandated to enforce the ban strictly, while the state security apparatus will provide support to maintain order and ensure compliance.
Education Commissioner, Professor Abiodun Ogunyemi, emphasized that the government is committed to safeguarding the welfare of students and creating an atmosphere where learning can thrive. He noted that the crackdown is part of broader reforms to improve educational standards and reduce distractions that hinder academic performance.
Parents and community leaders have largely welcomed the initiative, calling for sustained collaboration between the government, schools, and security agencies to eradicate violence and foster a culture of respect and responsibility among youths.
The Oyo State Government has also pledged to provide additional resources for counselling and mentorship programs aimed at addressing the root causes of hooliganism, thereby promoting positive behavioural change and enhancing the overall educational experience for students.
