The Presidency has swiftly dismissed rumors circulating online that President Bola Tinubu has removed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Reports claiming that Yakubu had been replaced by Professor Bashiru Olamilekan, in what was described as a “sweeping change” in the leadership of the electoral body, went viral on Monday morning, causing confusion among the public.
Responding to the false reports, O’tega Ogra, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Digital and New Media, urged Nigerians to disregard the claims. Ogra described the news as “fake” and reassured the public that no such decision had been made by the president.
“Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman,” Ogra said in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter).
He further clarified that any official announcement regarding such a decision would come directly from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) or another credible government channel, emphasizing that “any such announcement will come from the SGF’s office or any other official source.”
The misleading report has since been debunked, with no official statement from the Presidency or any other federal agency to support the claim.
