President Tinubu Pays Tribute to Late Justice Ibitola Adebisi Sotuminu, a Judicial Icon

President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Justice Ibitola Adebisi Sotuminu, a former Chief Judge of Lagos State, who left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s judicial landscape.

Justice Sotuminu, who passed away at the age of 86, was remembered for her integrity, honour, and diligence during her illustrious career spanning over four decades.

Justice Sotuminu’s remarkable journey began as a magistrate in 1969, culminating in her appointment as the first woman Chief Registrar of the Lagos State High Court in 1984. She later became a High Court Judge in 1986 and served as Chief Judge from 2001 to 2004.

During her tenure as Chief Judge, she implemented groundbreaking reforms that modernized the Lagos judiciary, including expanding court infrastructure, digitizing judicial processes, and expediting justice delivery. These reforms significantly enhanced Lagos’ reputation as a legal hub in Nigeria.

President Tinubu, who worked closely with Justice Sotuminu during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, praised her leadership and contributions to judicial reforms.

He extended condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues, as well as to the Body of Benchers, the Nigerian Bar Association, and other legal bodies.

As the final burial rites commenced, President Tinubu prayed for the peaceful rest of her soul and comfort for her loved ones.

Justice Sotuminu’s legacy serves as a testament to her dedication to public service and her role in shaping the judicial system in Lagos State.

Her contributions will continue to inspire future generations of legal professionals and policymakers in Nigeria.
