Putin Affirms Russia’s Military Support to Iran Is Lawful and Unrelated to Current Crisis

Moscow, June 18, 2025 – Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that Russia has supplied Iran with military hardware, stressing that these transactions are in full compliance with international laws and bear no connection to the ongoing regional crises.

Addressing the media during a press briefing, President Putin reiterated Moscow’s stance that its military cooperation with Tehran predates current tensions and is grounded in longstanding bilateral agreements. He emphasised that Russia’s arms supplies to Iran were conducted transparently and in accordance with all applicable international regulations.

Putin dismissed allegations that Russia’s support to Iran has exacerbated instability in the Middle East, underlining that these claims lack factual basis. He reiterated Russia’s commitment to respecting the sovereignty of nations and promoting peaceful resolutions to regional disputes.

The Russian leader also highlighted that arms trade is a sovereign right of states and that Moscow continues to advocate for dialogue and diplomatic engagement to address security challenges in the region.

This declaration comes amid heightened global scrutiny over military alliances and arms transfers as tensions escalate across parts of the Middle East. Russia’s position seeks to clarify its role and deflect accusations of contributing to conflict escalation.
