Reconstruction Begins on 3.78km Akala Way–Akobo Junction Road in Ibadan

IBADAN, NIGERIA – MAY 15, 2025 — The Federal Government has flagged off the reconstruction of the 3.78-kilometre Akala Way–Akobo Junction road in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State, signalling a renewed commitment to critical infrastructure renewal in Ibadan and surrounding communities.

The project, which falls under the supervision of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, ease commuter experience, and stimulate economic activity in the axis. With a budgetary allocation of ₦150 million for 2024, the reconstruction forms part of a broader strategy to rehabilitate deteriorated road corridors across the state.

According to details on the federal government’s transparency platform, Eyemark.ng, the Akala Way–Akobo Junction road reconstruction involves full-scale excavation, resurfacing, drainage works, and asphalting, all targeted at delivering a modern and durable road.

Local residents and commuters who rely heavily on the route have lauded the move, expressing hope that the intervention will relieve years of hardship caused by flooding and poor road conditions, particularly during the rainy season.

“This road has been long overdue for attention. For years, residents and road users have battled potholes and heavy erosion. This reconstruction gives us a sense of relief and optimism,” said Saheed Ajibola, a commercial tricycle operator in the area.

The project also aligns with Governor Seyi Makinde’s ongoing urban renewal programme, which has seen the dualisation and rehabilitation of key routes such as the 8.3km Akobo-Ojurin-Olorunda Abaa Road and the 7.25km Idi Ape–Basorun–Akobo–Odogbo Barracks Road. These projects have been instrumental in reshaping traffic flow and opening up emerging residential and commercial hubs in Ibadan.

Though federally funded, the Akala Way project has attracted commendation from state officials and stakeholders who see it as complementary to the Makinde administration’s infrastructural priorities.

The road is expected to be completed within the 2024 fiscal year, and officials say all contractors have been mandated to adhere strictly to quality standards and delivery timelines to avoid unnecessary delays.

With reconstruction work now underway, the Akala Way–Akobo corridor may soon be transformed into a vital and efficient urban link, fostering smoother movement and supporting local livelihoods in Oyo State’s ever-expanding capital.
