ABUJA — The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on National Planning and Economic Development, Hon. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, has called on Nigerians to actively engage their elected representatives in the National Assembly, stressing the importance of public accountability and transparency in governance.
Speaking during a recent policy dialogue on inclusive economic development held in Abuja, Isiaka emphasized that constituents must not shy away from asking critical questions and demanding performance from lawmakers, especially in matters that directly affect national planning, budgeting, and resource allocation.
According to him, the legislature functions most effectively when citizens participate actively in the democratic process and hold their representatives to account. He noted that feedback from constituents is crucial in shaping development policies that reflect the true needs and priorities of the Nigerian people.
“Democracy thrives where there is robust engagement between the people and those they have elected to represent them. I urge every Nigerian to demand accountability from their representatives at all levels, particularly on how national development policies are being implemented,” Hon. Isiaka stated.
He further explained that the National Assembly plays a vital role in oversight, policy review, and ensuring that government agencies deliver on their mandates. He encouraged citizens, civil society groups, and community leaders to monitor legislative proceedings, provide constructive feedback, and participate in public hearings when invited.
Isiaka also acknowledged the increasing demand for transparency in the budgeting process and pledged that his committee would continue to advocate for greater clarity and public involvement in economic planning. He assured that the National Planning and Economic Development Committee remains committed to ensuring that policies are people-centered and economically inclusive.
His remarks come at a time when Nigerians are expressing growing concern over the performance of elected officials and the effective use of public funds across sectors.
