The Saudi Arabian government has approved a new policy granting first-time pilgrims a paid leave of 10 to 15 days to enable them to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. This development, announced by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD), is seen as a major boost for Muslim employees seeking to fulfill one of the key pillars of Islam without facing professional or financial setbacks.
According to the ministry, the paid leave is a one-time benefit and is only available to employees who have completed at least two continuous years of service with their current employer. The leave duration includes the Eid al-Adha public holiday and is intended to ease the pressure on workers who may otherwise struggle to balance religious obligations with work commitments.
The ministry clarified that employers retain the right to determine how many employees can take advantage of the Hajj leave in a given year, depending on the company’s operational needs. This provision aims to strike a balance between facilitating religious observance and ensuring business continuity.
This policy is in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which seeks to modernize the country’s labor market while preserving its cultural and religious heritage. By encouraging policies that support workers’ spiritual lives, the Kingdom is also promoting employee welfare and inclusion.
Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is a sacred obligation that must be fulfilled at least once in a lifetime by Muslims who are physically and financially able.
