Security Beefed Up As Oyo Prepares For Alaafin’s Historic Coronation

In anticipation of the grand coronation ceremony of the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2025, the Oyo State government has implemented comprehensive security measures across the ancient city.
Our correspondent observed heightened security presence with police vans and security personnel strategically positioned throughout key areas including Owoade, Jabata, Akesan, Isale Oyo, Eleekara, and the School of Survey neighborhood.
A senior police source, speaking on Thursday, confirmed that additional officers have been deployed to maintain order during the historic event. “The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, have made extensive preparations to ensure the coronation proceeds without any disruptions,” the source stated.
The coronation follows Oba Owoade’s successful completion of the mandatory 21-day traditional seclusion rites known as Oro Ipebi, which he concluded on Saturday, March 29. The new monarch had previously received his staff and instrument of office from the Oyo State government on January 13, 2025, at a ceremony held at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
The main coronation event will take place at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo town, with additional activities scheduled at Ladigbolu Grammar School, Durbar Stadium, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi Mini Stadium, and the Palace of the Alaafin.
Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to lead an impressive array of dignitaries to the event, including former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, ambassadors from four countries, and over 200 Oyo indigenes based in Canada. Traditional rulers from across Nigeria, diplomats, and government officials are also anticipated to grace the occasion.
The influx of visitors has had a significant impact on local hospitality services, with hotels across the ancient city reporting full bookings. A hotel manager who requested anonymity told our correspondent, “We have upgraded our facilities to accommodate the surge of distinguished guests. Security agencies have also assured us of adequate protection throughout the period.”
In preparation for maximum community participation, the famous Akesan market and other commercial centers in the vicinity will suspend operations during the coronation, allowing market vendors and local residents to fully partake in the celebrations.
Oba Owoade ascends the revered throne following the passing of the previous Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, continuing the lineage of one of Yorubaland’s most prestigious traditional institutions.
The coronation represents a significant cultural milestone for Oyo town and the wider Yoruba cultural heritage, with elaborate ceremonial rites expected to showcase the rich traditions associated with the ancient Oyo Empire.
