The Nigerian Senate has declined the request of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to resume her legislative duties, insisting that her return can only follow the conclusion of her ongoing appeal case.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, has been embroiled in a prolonged legal battle over her election victory. While earlier judgments upheld her mandate, the matter is still under consideration at the Court of Appeal.
Senate leadership explained that allowing her to resume before the court delivers its final verdict could amount to preempting judicial authority. They maintained that the upper chamber would abide strictly by the rule of law.
Political analysts say the decision underscores the delicate balance between legislative independence and respect for judicial processes in Nigeria’s democratic system.
