Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal delivered a mesmerizing performance for Spain in their dramatic Nations League quarter-final against the Netherlands, showcasing his electrifying talent while enduring a moment of frustration in a penalty shootout.
The 17-year-old winger scored a stunning extra-time goal but saw his spot-kick saved as Spain edged past the Dutch 5-4 on penalties following a pulsating 3-3 draw (5-5 on aggregate) at a packed Mestalla Stadium in Valencia.
Yamal, already a Euro 2024 winner with Spain and a key figure for Barcelona, lit up the match with a moment of sheer class in extra time. Controlling a lofted pass from Dean Huijsen with an exquisite first touch, he turned sharply, created space, and curled a sublime finish past Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The strike was a perfect response to critics, including former Dutch star Rafael van der Vaart, who had questioned Yamal’s effort levels after the first leg. The teenager later playfully clapped back on Instagram, posting a photo of Van der Vaart with the caption: “Shorts down, a goal, a missed penalty, and into the semi-finals. Come on Spain!”
Despite his heroics, Yamal’s night ended with a bittersweet note as his penalty in the shootout was comfortably saved by Verbruggen. However, Spain held their nerve, with Pedri converting the decisive spot-kick after Donyell Malen’s miss for the Netherlands.
Pedri, Yamal’s Barcelona teammate, brushed off the miss with humor and praise, saying, “I told him it was a terrible penalty! But he doesn’t let pressure affect him. We have to take care of him and enjoy having him.”
Defender Marc Cucurella also joked about the incident, saying, “I saw him step up with confidence, then I saw how he hit it and thought, ‘What a disaster!’”
Yamal’s fearlessness and flair have drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi, and his performances continue to captivate fans. With four goals in 19 appearances for Spain, he plays with the composure of a seasoned star.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente acknowledged Yamal’s growth, saying, “He’s disappointed about the penalty but happy overall. He gave us what we needed, but he’s still maturing.”
Spain will now face France in the Nations League semi-finals as they aim to defend their 2023 title. Yamal, who famously clashed with Adrien Rabiot during Euro 2024, will be eager to make another statement on the big stage.
With Yamal and Nico Williams terrorizing defenses on either flank, Spain’s attacking verve promises more thrills in the tournament ahead.
