The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has declared that its ongoing strike action will not be suspended until the labour dispute with the Dangote Group is fully resolved.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the union said the industrial action, which has disrupted operations in parts of the oil and gas sector, was necessitated by alleged unfair labour practices at the Dangote Refinery and its affiliated operations. NUPENG accused the company of failing to address long-standing grievances raised by workers, including poor welfare conditions, union suppression, and unresolved contractual disputes.
Union leaders stressed that dialogue had been attempted, but the Dangote Group had allegedly failed to show commitment to implementing agreements reached in earlier negotiations.
“The strike continues until our members’ demands are met. We cannot accept a system where workers’ rights are trampled upon in the name of profit,” a NUPENG spokesperson said.
The standoff has sparked concerns about potential fuel distribution disruptions nationwide, with industry watchers warning that prolonged action could worsen supply chains and hike petroleum product prices already under pressure.
Efforts by labour mediators and government officials to intervene are expected to intensify in the coming days.
