Super Eagles Train Behind Closed Doors Ahead of Crucial World Cup Qualifier Against Zimbabwe

The Super Eagles have intensified preparations behind closed doors as they gear up for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Zimbabwe on Tuesday.

Following their 2-0 victory over Rwanda last Friday, the Nigerian team flew directly from Kigali to Uyo via a chartered Valujet flight and resumed training on Sunday under strict conditions.

Head coach Eric Chelle has demanded maximum focus from his players, restricting media and visitor access to the training sessions. Team media officer Promise Efoghe confirmed that Sunday’s session was closed, while Monday’s training will only be open for the mandatory 15 minutes following the official pre-match press conference.

“Sunday’s training is closed. Monday’s session will be opened for the mandatory 15 minutes, shortly after the official press conference,” Efoghe stated.

The Franco-Malian coach remains cautious despite the win over Rwanda, ensuring his squad stays disciplined ahead of the crucial encounter. Nigeria currently sits fourth in Group C with six points from five matches, trailing group leaders South Africa by four points.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s national team also held their first training session on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium’s training pitch.

A victory against Zimbabwe would significantly boost Nigeria’s chances of securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup, to be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. In another Group C fixture, South Africa will face Benin Republic in Abidjan.

The Super Eagles will have two full training sessions before Tuesday’s decisive clash in Uyo.
