Baghdad, June 21, 2025 – Massive crowds of demonstrators took to the streets of Baghdad and several other Iraqi cities on Friday in a show of solidarity with Iran and to denounce Israel’s recent military actions amid escalating regional tensions.
The protests, largely mobilised by followers of influential Iraqi cleric Moqtada Sadr, drew thousands of supporters waving Iraqi and Iranian flags, chanting anti-Israel slogans, and calling for a unified stance across the Muslim world against what they described as “unprovoked aggression” targeting Iranian sovereignty.
In Baghdad, protesters gathered in central squares under heavy security presence, holding placards and banners condemning Israeli strikes and urging Arab nations to act decisively in defence of Iran and the wider region.
“We stand with the Islamic Republic of Iran against Zionist aggression,” one protester said. “This is not just about Iran. It’s about resisting oppression in any form.”
The demonstrations come amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, with both nations exchanging threats and warnings in recent weeks. The protests in Iraq reflect growing concern in the region about the potential for wider conflict and its impact on neighbouring countries.
Cleric Moqtada Sadr, known for his strong nationalist and anti-Western positions, has in the past mobilised large segments of Iraq’s population in response to foreign interventions and regional crises. His influence remains significant, particularly among Shi’a communities.
Observers note that the public show of support for Iran underscores the complex alliances and sectarian undercurrents shaping Middle Eastern geopolitics. It also places additional pressure on Iraq’s leadership to balance its diplomatic ties while managing internal sentiments and security.
Authorities reported no major incidents during the rallies, though security forces remained on high alert amid concerns over potential unrest. The Iraqi government has yet to issue an official response to the protests or comment on the broader implications of the Israel-Iran tensions for regional stability.
