Three Kenyan soldiers have been confirmed dead following a roadside bomb explosion in the northeastern region of the country, near the border with Somalia.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, July 13, 2025, when a convoy of military vehicles was targeted by an improvised explosive device (IED) suspected to have been planted by the al-Shabaab militant group. The soldiers were on patrol along the Lamu-Garissa road, an area notorious for insurgent activities linked to the Somalia-based terrorist organization.
According to military sources, the explosion severely damaged one of the vehicles in the convoy, instantly killing three personnel and injuring several others. Reinforcement teams were immediately deployed to the scene to secure the area and evacuate the wounded to nearby medical facilities.
Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) spokesperson, Col. Zipporah Kioko, confirmed the attack and stated that investigations were ongoing. She reiterated the military’s commitment to flushing out criminal elements and ensuring the safety of communities along the border regions.
“We mourn the loss of our brave soldiers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. Their sacrifice will not be in vain,” she said.
The government has condemned the attack, vowing to intensify security operations in the affected areas. This latest assault adds to the string of deadly ambushes that have plagued Kenya’s border zones since the country deployed troops to Somalia in support of the African Union peacekeeping mission.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security authorities as military operations continue across volatile zones.
