Tony Elumelu Commits ₦25 Billion to Boost Lagos Food Production Drive

July 23, 2025

Renowned Nigerian philanthropist and businessman, Tony Elumelu, has announced a landmark donation of ₦25 billion to support the Lagos State Government’s “Produce for Lagos” initiative, a strategic agricultural scheme aimed at enhancing food security and reducing dependency on external food supplies.

The announcement was made during a high-level stakeholders’ forum in Lagos, where Elumelu expressed his commitment to empowering local farmers and ensuring Lagos meets its own food production needs. The initiative seeks to scale up sustainable food systems, promote agro-processing, and provide direct support to smallholder farmers across the state.

“Lagos is the heartbeat of Nigeria’s economy. If we can feed Lagos sustainably, we can feed the nation,” Elumelu stated, emphasizing the role of the private sector in driving inclusive economic development.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commended the gesture, describing it as a “transformational boost” to the state’s food resilience efforts. He noted that the funds will go towards land acquisition, mechanization, training, and technology adoption for farmers within and around Lagos.

The ₦25 billion donation forms part of the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s broader mission to promote entrepreneurship, local production, and economic self-reliance across Africa.
